How Goddards Brewery Food & Drink Was Sold to Powder Monkey Group | Deal Summary
Knightsbridge advises on a landmark sale of a UK beer pioneer…
Goddards Brewery, a family-run, award-winning producer of traditional craft beers on the Isle of Wight, has been sold in a highly substantial deal. Founded in 1993 by its namesake Anthony Goddard, it quickly became part of the UK’s early wave of independent craft breweries.
The brewery began with a modest 15-barrel plant on a farmstead before growing into the island’s leading producer and visitor attraction. In its 30th anniversary year, Goddards moved into a bespoke-built brewing centre, complete with a restaurant.
The sale follows Anthony’s decision to retire after three decades of hard work. Since its inception, the brewery has produced over 13.5 million pints of beer, cementing its place in British brewing history. This new chapter sees Goddards join Powder Monkey Group.
The acquirer is an independent craft brewing and hospitality collective with operations in the UK and Australia. Based in Gosport, Hampshire, the business was founded in a historic naval gunpowder store that lay derelict for fifty years.
Some interesting facts about Powder Monkey Group:
• The Group sponsors Lewis Hamilton’s younger brother, Nicholas, in the British Touring Car Championship.
• One of its Directors is former England Rugby international Steve Thompson MBE, once the country’s most capped hooker and a key member of the 2003 World Cup-winning team.
• A previous brewery acquisition was made through our sister company, KBS Corporate, when the Group purchased Durham-based Castle Eden, founded almost 200 years ago.
Brewing began in 2021 under the leadership of Founder and CEO Andy Burdon, who commented: “We are delighted that Goddards is now part of the Group. It adds cask and bottled beer to our portfolio as well as the heritage associated with the brand.”
His sentiments were echoed by Anthony Goddard: “Since our modest start, we’ve come a long way, and we’re delighted to join the family of coastal breweries in the Powder Monkey Group brand portfolio, bringing together strong brands with equally strong heritages.”
Mike McGeever, Chairman of Powder Monkey Group, added: “We’re absolutely delighted to welcome Anthony and the Goddards team to the Group. This acquisition complements our UK offering and enhances our capacity and capability. Hampshire and the Isle of Wight are very much aligned.”
Moving forward, Goddards Brewery will continue to operate under the banner of Powder Monkey Group as ‘The Home of Goddards’. The full Goddards range will remain in production, ensuring continuity for its loyal customer base while expanding the reach of both brands.
The Knightsbridge team wishes Anthony a well-earned retirement – and every success to the growing Powder Monkey Group.
